Initiatives for Fly Ash utilization in BPSCL
Fly ash is the byproduct of combustion of coal in Thermal Power Plant. Ash management division of BPSCL is working under the guidelines laid down by the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change & Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board for utilization of fly ash and persistently exploring new avenues for sustainable ash utilization.
Following major ash sustainability initiatives have been taken up:
- An MoU has been signed between BPSCL and NHAI, PIU–Dhanbad for utilization of pond ash in road construction activities of NH – 32and NH– 2. The work has started in Dec’ 2019.
- Pond ash is being regularly used for backfilling of low lying areas inside BSL plant premises under joint action plan between BPSCL and BSL.
- Bio-stabilization of legacy Ash is being carried out with jute geo-textile and vetiver grass.
- Flyash is being supplied to cement plant and various local fly ash brick manufacturers on free of cost basis.
- Onesemi-automatic fly ash brick manufacturing machine has been set up inside the plant premises.
- Use of fly ash bricks has been made mandatory for all construction activities in BPSCL and encouraged BSL too.
- Two (02) nos. of fly ash bagging machines have been commissioned near ash silo for fly ash transportation in environment friendly manner in bags.
- 350 m long railway platform has been constructed to facilitate ash transportation in railway wagons.
- An Eco garden has been developed within the plant premises on a fly ash heap which is anexample of land retrieval using waste ash.
